Third-country nationals are obliged to apply for the exchange of their driving licence for a licence issued by the Slovak Republic after 185 days of continuous residence in the territory of the Slovak Republic. The application must be submitted within 60 days of the expiry of this period.

In the case of holders of driving licenses issued in EEA countries, the exchange is not mandatory, but it is possible after 185 days of registering for temporary residence in Slovakia

Once the exchange has taken place, the original driving licence is returned to the competent authority of the issuing state, together with information on the reason for the exchange and details of the newly issued licence.

If you fail to exchange your licence when required, you may be considered to be driving without a valid permit.
