Temporary residence permit

A temporary residence permit in Slovakia is intended for third-country nationals who want to live in the country for more than 90 days, for example for the purpose of employement, business, or family reunification. It is granted for a specific purpose and for a limited period of time, with the possibility of extension.

Employment

This type of residence permit entitle a third-country national to legally work and reside in the territory of the Slovakia.

Family reunification

This type of residence permit allows the family members of a foreign national to live legally in Slovakia.

Business

This type of residence permit is intended for foreigners who want to live and do business legally in Slovakia.

Study

This type of residence permit is a solution for those who want to study in Slovakia.

Temporary residence for employment

Third-country nationals may apply for a temporary residence permit for the purpose of employment. This type of residence permit allows them to legally work and reside in Slovakia and is tied to a specific employment relationship and the fulfilment of legal requirements. In most cases, its approval is subject to a positive opinion issued by the Labour Office. However, this requirement does not apply in all cases, particularly where provided by law or an international agreement.

The temporary residence permit is granted for the duration of the employment, with its validity depending on the Labour Office’s approval, but for a maximum period of two years.

In the case of graduates of Slovak universities, the issuance of a temporary residence permit is not subject to the Labour Office’s approval, and the permit may be granted for a longer period.

The length of permitted stay depends on the main applicant (guarantor), and all family members must have the same address of temporary residence.

The advantage of this type of residence is the possibility of easier access to employment for a spouse after a certain period of time.

Temporary residence for business purposes

The application must be submitted in person at the Slovak embassy abroad or at the Foreign Police Department in Slovakia, if the legal requirements are met.

Temporary residence for study purposes

Temporary residence for STUDY purposes

Students from non-EU countries who plan to stay in Slovakia for more than 90 days must apply for temporary residence for study purposes. Temporary residence can be granted for the expected duration of studies, but for a maximum of 6 years.

If you plan to stay in Slovakia for no more than 90 days, it is not necessary to apply for temporary residence, provided that:

you enter Slovakia legally (e.g., on the basis of a visa or visa-free regime), and

you register your stay with the Foreign Police within 3 working days of arrival.
