Health Insurance for Foreign Nationals

Foreign nationals must be covered by health insurance throughout the entire period of their stay in the Slovak Republic. Health insurance must be arranged no later than three working days after receiving the residence permit card in Slovakia and is also a mandatory requirement when when applying for a visa.

In cooperation with AXA Insurance, we have expanded our portfolio of services to ensure that our clients enjoy maximum peace of mind while fully complying with all legal requirements. The insurance products offered are fully accepted by the Foreign Police as well as by the diplomatic missions of the Slovak Republic.

The insurance provides foreign nationals with access to healthcare services during their stay in Slovakia and ensures that, if needed, they will receive necessary medical treatment not only in Slovakia but also throughout the Schengen Area.

Within commercial health insurance, clients may choose between two types of coverage: Comprehensive Health Insurance and Emergency Health Insurance.

Comprehensive Health Insurance

Comprehensive commercial health insurance is designed for foreign nationals who are not eligible for coverage under the Slovak public health insurance system. The scope of coverage is comparable to public health insurance in the Slovak Republic.

This type of insurance is ideal for those who require broader coverage or expect regular medical care. It is particularly popular among families with young children.

The insurance includes a 24/7 assistance service to ensure support whenever needed.

You can calculate the price and arrange the insurance online by selecting the required coverage period here:

Who is this insurance for

The product is primarily intended for individuals who plan to stay in the territory of the Slovak Republic for 90 days or longer and are applying for a long-term visa or residence permit, or wish to extend their stay.

Comprehensive medical expenses insurance covers the reimbursement of reasonably incurred medical costs to a similar extent as public health insurance in the Slovak Republic.

It includes medical treatment and care, together with related diagnostic procedures, provided they are prescribed by a physician and necessary to stabilise the insured person’s condition so that they can either continue their stay or be safely repatriated.

Preventive care and dispensary (follow-up) care are also included.

You may choose between the following programmes:

STANDARD – covers comprehensive healthcare services.

MOTHER – includes comprehensive healthcare for the insured mother in connection with pregnancy and childbirth.

In addition to the MOTHER programme coverage, postnatal healthcare for the newborn of the insured mother is also covered, provided the child is born during the validity of her insurance.

Within the Schengen Area and in transit countries, the insurance is valid for necessary and urgent medical care only.

  • The insurance does not cover:

    • Any illness, injury, or other change in health condition that occurred before the start of the insurance.
    • Non-acute dental treatment.
    • Stays within the Schengen Area where the primary purpose is medical treatment of the insured person.
    • Any insured event that occurred outside the Schengen Area.
    • Any insured event that occurred in the country of which the insured person is a citizen, or in a country where the insured is covered by public health insurance or similar insurance.
    • Damage or injury arising from participation in dangerous or high-risk sports, or from professional sports activities.

Important: The complete list of covered benefits, limitations, and exclusions is set out in the policy terms and conditions. The current version is available at the following link.

Urgent Health Insurance

This insurance is intended for foreign nationals who require basic coverage for necessary and urgent medical care. It is particularly suitable for individuals who do not need regular medical treatment and wish to fulfil the legal requirement of health insurance during their stay in Slovakia, for example for the purpose of applying for a visa or residence permit.

The insurance includes a 24/7 assistance service to ensure support whenever needed.
